"What is your value?"

Updated: Jan 26

There are two types of value extrinsic and intrinsic.

Extrinsic value is based on accomplishments, possessions, appearance and living up to societal standards.

In our modern consumer driven society there has been a significant shift towards recognising success as wealth, possessions, status, and recognition. This has led to a higher valuation of extrinsic worth and some of us might feel pressured to meet these external standards.

Intrinsic value is what lies beneath the surface it is the internal worth that each of us has just by being alive. With mental health issues on the rise there has been a growing movement towards mindfulness, self-care, and our holistic well-being. Many people are recognizing the importance of developing a strong sense of intrinsic worth and self-acceptance, which contributes to overall happiness and mental health.

Understanding and embracing your intrinsic value is a transformative journey that has the power to reshape your perspectives, relationships, and overall well-being.

Here are some things you can start doing to move towards taking that transformative journey:

· Self-Reflection – reflect on your unique qualities, strengths, and passions

· Embrace your authenticity – Embrace your true self quirks and all

· Practice self-compassion – Treat yourself with the same kindness you offer to others

· Celebrate progress – Acknowledge your growth and accomplishments no matter how small

· Build meaningful connections – Surround yourself with people who appreciate you just as you are

· Engage in mindfulness and self-care – Put your needs in line or above others

· Recognise your contribution and impact – Recognise the positive impact you have on the world

Recognizing and nurturing your intrinsic value is essential for building a strong sense of self-worth that will remain steadfast even when you are facing challenges.

One thing I always remember is that I came into this world with only my intrinsic value and I will leave exactly the same way. This is ultimately what makes me happy and my extrinsic value is just things that add to that happiness
